A truly simple syrup made with fresh summer plums and spicy ginger. Perfect for adding to cocktails, lemonade or tea – the possibilities are endless!
I can’t believe I haven’t made fruity simple syrup until now.
Clearly, I’ve been living in la-la land over here. (Typical.) Because, truly, what could be (literally) more simple than throwing some fruit, water, and sugar in a pan, bringing it to a boil, then letting it steep?
Answer (in case you hadn’t already picked up on it): Nothing.
This particular variation is brought to you by summer. And the color pink.
Here’s how this is gonna go: Take about 4 ripe plums. Quarter those suckers. Throw them in a pot with 1 inch of fresh ginger root (peeled or unpeeled, doesn’t matter), some water and sugar. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat, cover, and let those suckers steep. 30 minutes later, strain out the spent plums and ginger, pour your syrup into a jar and stick it in the fridge.
How are you going to use your simple syrup?
Well, the obvious answer is to use it in a cocktail, but you could also use it to make flavored lemonade or iced tea. I happen to like it simply topped with some sparkling water for a homemade plum ginger soda. The plum flavor is sweet and mellow with a little bit of a *zing!* from the ginger — it’s pretty much all I want to drink for the rest of forever, really.
Since it is the 12th of the month, you know what that means – this recipe is part of the #12Bloggers project. This month’s theme was food in jars, and since it is hotter than hell almost everywhere right now, this Plum Ginger Simple Syrup (stored in a jar, of course) seemed like the perfect refreshing thing to share.
