Forget those salt-laden envelopes. Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix is a snap to make and tastes so much better!

Americans have a love of ranch.

I’m not talking about some kind of fleeting “Do you like me? Check yes or no” kind of love. No, no, this is more of the “I want to have your children and live happily ever after” kind of love.

Did that just get weird? Let’s back up a bit.

We love ranch. I think that most little kids – and probably a good portion of adults – only eat salad because of ranch dressing. Carrots? Dip ‘em in ranch. Broccoli? Made better with ranch. Celery? Well, nothing makes celery edible (sorry, it’s true), but ranch might just come closest to getting the job done. We even go so far as create ranch popcorn recipes. That’s some ranch love, right there.

But do you know what I don’t love? The fact that the second ingredient listed on a package of ranch dressing mix is salt. And they aren’t kidding, either. If you take a moment to taste the mix by itself, you will be hard-pressed to taste anything besides the salt. It overpowers any of the herbs and spices that actually make ranch dressing taste good.

Luckily, this is something that we can remedy quickly and easily at home. In fact, I would be willing to bet that you have at least 90% of these ingredients in your pantry already. Unlike some of our homemade fixes, which – while endlessly more delicious than the original – can be a bit time consuming (my Homemade Little Debbie Valentine Cakes come to mind), I promise that this Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix will take you less than 5 minutes to make.

How will you use your Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix? Any way that you want! Personally, I would head straight for these Cream Cheese Ranch Roll-Ups (although Vegetable Pizza is always a solid option, too), but any recipe that calls for a package of ranch dressing mix is a great place to start. Simply use 3 tablespoons of homemade mix in place of a standard package of the store-bought stuff for a flavor your family will love.

      1. I love ranch an seriously can tell the difference! First there’s the cheap restaurants use the nasty one! Then there’s the next one that you can struggle to get down. Then the best is so good. Funny all I have to do is look at it an I can tell. Ranch aficionado. .lolol. .loving ranch!

    1. I find powdered buttermilk at Walmart. I use it to make biscuits as nobody in my family drinks buttermilk so having powdered on hand helps. Refrigerated it lasts a long time.

  5. I was wondering if you can use yogurt or sour cream instead of mayo to make it into dressing. Also this powder will be great for wings.

    1. There are a variety of ways to make ranch mix into dressing (using various combos of yogurt/sour cream/mayo) – you can use this mix for any of them that you find and like!

  6. Love that I can make ranch without MSG!!! All the envelopes of Ranch contain it, and we are trying to eliminate it completely from our diet. How many envelopes is this recipe equivalent to?

  7. What would you reconstitute it with to make it a dressing and what would you mix it with to make it a dip?

  8. This is brilliant. I have so many recipes I have saved from US that call for ranch dressing mix. I have not found any in UK.
Have never heard of buttermilk powder either. Will ordinary milk powder be ok to use?

    1. The flavor from the buttermilk powder is what really gives it that ranch dressing “zing” – you’re welcome to leave it out, but do know that it won’t be quite the same.
