I personally find New Year’s Eve to be kind of tiring.

First of all, there’s the whole holiday-right-after-Christmas thing. You have just barely started to come out of your Christmas food coma when suddenly — BAM! You have to think about looking cute and festive again. Tiring.

Then, as a single girl, there is the whole do-I-need-a-date thing. Determining what your friends are doing, are they doing it individually or as a couple, should you have a date so as to not be the 3rd or 5th or 7th wheel…Again, tiring.

Finally, there is the whole where-do-we-go-that-isn’t-crazy-expensive thing. No explanation needed there. Tiring.

And all of that is without being the one hosting a party! I’m figuring we would have to take the aforementioned tiring elements and multiply the exhaustion by about 400 to reach the level of exhaustion reached when hosting a New Year’s Eve party.

Luckily for you, I have a super quick bite-sized dessert for you to add to your (possibly last-minute) menu. These baklava tassies (or tarts) are crazy easy and quick to pull together. Don’t believe me? Watch:

Line up some mini phyllo shells. These guys are great – you can fill them with just about anything and call it an hors d’oeuvres! Aren’t you fancy!

Toast up some chopped walnuts.

Spoon said walnuts into said phyllo shells.

Boil together some butter, sugar, and spices.

Look! You’ve got a syrup!

Spoon your syrup over the walnuts in each shell…

Top each one with a few more chopped walnuts, just to make it pretty!

Line ’em up on a pretty platter…

Look at you…aren’t you fancy?! And with all of that extra time you have, you can take a quick nap before your guests arrive! (Or clean…but I’d choose the nap, personally.)

Ingredients
  

  • Toasted chopped walnuts
  • 24 mini phyllo shells
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions
 

  • Spoon 1 teaspoon of toasted walnuts into each phyllo shell.
  • In a saucepan, cook and stir remaining ingredients over medium heat until bubbly. Cook for 1 minute more, stirring constantly.
  • Spoon mixture over walnuts in each shell. Top with additional chopped walnuts. Let stand until set.

    1. I would probably store them in the fridge. They should last for 3 days or so, and I personally did not have an issue with them getting soggy. If you are planning to make them for a party, though, I wouldn’t make them much more than a day or so in advance.
